United Steelworkers President Leo Gerard

President Leo Gerard is live from Pittsburgh to talk about the demonization of labor and the subsequent rise in corporate power. The crowd that says collective bargaining needs to end for public employees because of budget concerns are the same people who supported trade deals and deregulation that caused the outsourcing of our manufacturing sector and crashed our economy. President Gerard also tells me how U.S. labor laws stack up against other industrialized nations.

Al Matano - Kloppenburg Signs In High Demand

My Dane County Supervior Al Matano took it upon himself to help fill demand for Kloppenburg signs. We talk to Al about where the campaign cash is going from on both sides and the whining going on by Vicki & company who say a campaign finance law the Dems passed last session is keeping Prosser's in a straight jacket. Matano also lets you know what you can do in the last few days to help elect JoAnne Kloppenburg.

John Nichols - Republicans Aren't Listening

Cap Times Associate Editor John Nichols explains why the Fitzgerald brothers, Governor Walker, AG Van Hollen, and DOA Secretary Mike Huebsch are all acting in violation of Judge Sumi's court order. We also talk about how the Prosser/Kloppenburg election is getting nationwide attention and why the latest tactic by Prosser supporters is to attack Madison.

WI AFL-CIO President Phil Neuenfeldt

One of leaders opposing Walker's assault on public unions and the middle-class is my good friend Phil Neuenfeldt. We get his reaction on the continued defiance of Judge Sumi's court order and the upcoming rally to honor MLK's life and legacy to labor.

Lisa Graves - Prosser's Koch Konnections

Lisa Graves from PR Watch joins me to talk about Justice Prosser's connection to the Koch brothers and his support for Citizen's United which opened the door for unlimited corporate spending in our elections.

3.30.2011

Supreme Court Candidate JoAnne Kloppenburg

Walker's assault on unions has brought a lot of immediacy to JoAnne Kloppenburg's candidacy for Supreme Court. Whoever wins April 5th will play a pivotal role in parsing out the current & future legal battle springing out the Capitol. Assistant Attorney General Kloppenburg is in the studio to talk about her background, her campaign, and she responds to some of the spurious claims put out by Prosser's defenders on Milwaukee talk radio.

Make sure to vote April 5th!

Paul Soglin for Mayor - Focus On Neighborhoods

Paul Soglin is live in the studio to talk about some big differences between himself and Mayor Dave when it comes to defending labor in Madison. We also hear Paul's plans to combat poverty in our city, the right way to attract business, and Mayor Dave's predilection for privatizing city services.

Secretary of State Doug La Follette

Our Secretary of State Doug La Follette joins me to comment on Judge Sumi's order that prevents him from publishing Walker's budget repair bill. La Follette made some news this morning by saying that he might have to pay for his own attorney to represent him in this ongoing court battle since Attorney General Van Hollen's DOJ insists the budget repair bill is law.

Comrade John Nichols - Forward Janesville Rally

John Nichols was with me and hundreds of others to protest Walker's visit to Forward Janesville's annual dinner at the Holiday Inn. We talk about why Wisconsin businesses should be on our side and what we witnessed at the huge rally yesterday.

Peg Lautenschlager - On The Verge Of A Constiutional Crisis

Former Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager explains Walker's defiance of Judge Sumi's order to temporary stop the publication of the budget repair bill. The taxpayers are paying for this judicial fandango when the Fitz brothers could abide by the open meetings law and pass the law again. Ms. Lautenschalger also talks about a possible constitutional crisis if Walker violates Judge Sumi's order and continues to pretend that the budget repair bill is law.

Forward Janesville Rally

Yesterday I attended an inspiring rally in front of the Janesville's Holiday Inn to protest the Forward Janesville (Janesville's Chamber of Commerce) annual dinner that Governor Walker was attending. You would not believe the parade of Lexuses that had to drive past chants of "shame". Ed Sadlowski from AFSCME, who helped organize the rally, is on live line to talk about how hard-hit Janesville will fare under Walker's budget repair bill.

Peg Lautenschlager - MKE Talkers Desperate To Save Prosser

The Milwaukee talk radio cartel is going into crisis mode to save their buddy Justice Prosser. Their latest endeavor to turn his campaign around is to label Kloppenburg a radical environmentalist. Charlie Sykes went on and on yesterday about a case Kloppenburg was involved in while representing the DNR. Kloppenburg, performing her duties as an assistant AG, helped prosecute a farmer who was not following runoff laws and was polluting his local watershed. Republican Attorney General JB Van Hollen, hardly a steward of the land, was the one who eventually threw the man in jail after he disobeyed a court order. Nice try Charlie but this one isn't going to stick.

Peg Lautenschlager joins me to give the details of the case and to debunk this pathetic attempt to smear Kloppenburg. Ms. Lautenschalger also comments on the legality of publishing the budget repair bill without going through the Sec. of State's office.

General Electric Pays No Federal Taxes

FOX news of all networks has railed against GE for not paying any federal taxes last year, a practice that is far from uncommon.

With an army of accounts, lobbyists, and tax attorneys GE and other corporations have found "innovative accounting" practices that allow them to offshore most of their money and avoid paying taxes in the States. This is why America is faltering. If only FOX caught on to this when they advocated for the very loopholes and deregulation that allowed GE and others to avoid paying their fair share.

John Nichols - One Day Longer

John Nichols from the Cap Times speaks on the ongoing court battle over the budget repair bill. The latest is that AG Van Hollen has earned his stripes in Fitzwalkerstan. Nichols and I also go over some upcoming demonstrations around the State.

Protest Governor Walker at Forward Janesville Dinner - 5pm
Holiday Inn Express & Conference Center
3100 Wellington Place
Janesville, WI 53546

Wal-Mart - Too Many Victims

In a case ten years in the making, a class-action lawsuit against Wal-Mart claims that the world's largest retail paid women less than men and often passed them up for promotions even when they had more experience. What's Wal-Mart's defense? That they have victimized so many people that this lawsuit could be worth billions and it would set a bad precedent for huge corporations who want to keep violating their employees' rights. So I ask you this morning, do you weep for the Waltons?

Sam Stevenson - Candidate in District 2 Aldermanic Race

District 2 aldermanic candidate Sam Stevenson is live in the studio to talk about his race against incumbent Bridget Maniaci. Stevenson, who has been widely endorsement in the progressive community, hopes to unseat Maniaci who was backed by the Mayor two years ago and has helped push through some controversial developments.

Herman Cain - Racist Republican

Former right-wing radio host Herman Cain, who is running for President, was asked whether he would ever appoint a Muslim to his hypothetical cabinet. Cain promptly said, "NEIN". He did give an explanation. Cain reasoned that as long as Muslims are trying to secretly enact Sharia Law, he could not in good faith appoint one to serve along side him.

As an African-American conservative, Cain thinks his race makes him immune to calls of bigotry. When you believe in unfounded theories of an Islamic takeover and cast an entire population as untrustworthy, you are indeed a racist. Mr. Cain is not a dark horse candidate either. Demonizing invisible boogeymen has gone mainstream in the Republican party.

3.28.2011

Former Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton- Geraldine Ferraro

Barbara Lawton, one of the best Lt. Governors in Wisconsin history, joins us live to talk about the legacy of vice-presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro who passed away over the weekend. Lawton also weighs in on our State Supreme Court race.

Mark Pocan

State Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Madison) explains why he coined the term "FitzWalkerstan" to describe the 3rd world state that Gov. Walker and the Fitzgerald brothers are creating through their war on democracy, worker rights and the middle class. Pocan discusses how the cuts to public worker pay will affect local economies all over the state. Pocan also gives his opinion on the legal ramifications of the Legislative Reference Bureau bypassing Sec. of State Doug La Follette and publishing the controversial budget repair bill.

The Turd & The Burg

Justice David Prosser debated challenger Joanne Kloppenburg again on Friday. Prosser took issue with an ad the Kloppenburg campaign is running and made a surprisingly endorsement of the Citizens United case which gives corporation unlimited influence in elections. I take your calls and then John Nichols is on to talk about the litany of controversial statements by Prosser during the debate.

Republicans Have No Regard For The Law - Marty Beil

AFSCME Council 24 Director Marty Beil is on the live line to comment on the desperate attempt by Wisconsin Republicans to circumvent our legislative process and push through the budget repair bill by any means necessary.

Walker's DOA Restricts Speech

Dane County Supervisor Melissa Sargent and her sons went to the Capitol over the weekend to protest Walker's assault on public unions. Her eldest sons brought a big Solidarity Forever sign to the 2nd floor of the Capitol only to be told that they weren't in the proper demonstration zone. The Department of Administration has issued new rules against signs that apparently trump our rights in the state. constitution. Supervisor Sargent refused to be hustled into Walker's free speech area so she was issued a citation. Just another day in Fitzwalkerstan.

3.25.2011

John Nichols - Threats, Appeals, & Prosser

John Nichols and I go over the stunning revelation that the Walker administration not cooperating with Madison Police Chief Noble Wray over the issue of planting political provocateur among the demonstrators and not reporting email threats against protesters. We also go over new developments in the court battle over the budget repair bill and the State Supreme Court Race.

Marj Passman On Charter Schools

Madison School Board Member Marj Passman gives her take on Walker's plan to drastically increase charter schools in our State while cutting public education funding by unprecedented amounts. Passman also gives an update on how Madison schools are preparing for Walker's proposed budget cuts.

Diane Hesselbein - No Eulogies Under Morlino

Dane County Supervisor Diane Hesselbein was deeply saddened when she learned that Bishop Morlino had put an edict out that no one can eulogize their loved ones at a Catholic funeral. Ms. Hesselbein recently lost her father to Alzheimer and she was informed the day of the service that she would not be allowed to speak at her own father's funeral. This does nothing but drive people away from the Church and the Bishop should rethink his recalcitrant position.

Badger Honor Flight

Steve Barlett joins me to talk about a wonderful organization called Badger Honor Flight. The mission of the group is to let WWII veterans see the war memorials in Washington before it's too late. Steve shares some inspiring stories and we talk about the upcoming flight. I'm proud to say I will be joining the veterans on their trip April 2nd.

Republican Threats Against Protesters

The tens of thousands of emails that were just released to the media by the Walker administration have led to the resignation of another Indiana prosecutor. These are not your run of mill crazies either, they are political figures within the Republican party. Indiana Prosecutor Carlos Lam sent an email to Mr. Walker supporting his efforts to bust unions and offered the suggestion that they stage a fake attack on the Governor to paint the protesters as a violent mob. The Koch call, where Walker admitted they had contemplated putting agitators into the crowds, came just a few days later. Funny how every little threat against Walker and the Fitzgerald Brothers was reported to authorities but threats against protesters go unnoticed.
